Crosslake Lutheran Church
Sunday, May 24, 2020
The annual Memorial day service will be held Sunday, May 24th at 10:00 a.m. at the Outdoor Worship Center on Daggett Pine Road with gates opening at 9:15 a.m.
The outdoor worship area is in compliance with the current Minnesota Department of Health guidelines and practices for the service and comply with regulations at the time of print of this newspaper. Attendees are asked to stay in their vehicles during the entire service and practice social distancing.
The service will start begin at 10:00 a.m. with Pastors Kristin Oltmann and Kurt Hagestuen presiding.
This yearly service honors and remembers our deceased military veterans who served our country. The service includes our featured guest speaker-Susan Edwards-Post commander for the Billie Brown Post 627 in Nisswa. She served in the United States Air Force as a law enforcement K-9 handler and is currently serving as 6th district Adjutant and chairwoman of the Department Law and Order Committee. A graduate of the National American Legion College, she is a strong proponent for women veterans, an active Legion Rider, served on the Children and Youth Committee at the 2019 National Legion convention and serves as editor of the 6th District Newsletter. She has recently been endorsed for Department Chaplain by her home post and the 6th District Executive committee. Susan and her husband Paul (current 6th District commander and Army and Air Force veteran) are both retired from Boeing Co. and have a son currently serving in the United States Army.
The service will also feature a contingent of the American Legion color guard from the Crosslake post firing an honorary salute to the dead, patriotic songs, TAPS and a flyover by the North Star Squadron. Recognition of veterans and military families will also be part of this very special day of remembrance.
The Outdoor Worship Center is located at 14019 Daggett Pine Road, across from Crosslake Community Center.
Please join us as we honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in order to preserve our freedom.

2020 Memorial Day Ceremony Cancelled
Regretfully, due to the Governor’s recent extension of the “gatherings must be smaller than 10 people” and the need to continue social distancing, the 2020 Memorial Day Ceremony on May 25th at Pinewood Cemetery is cancelled.
The Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion Post will still place flags on all the veterans gravesites buried at Pinewood for family members who wish to visit and pay tribute to them.
The Post will will have an abbreviated ceremony at 10am raising the flag to half staff and playing taps to honor and remember the deceased military veterans who served our Country.
Emily Memorial Day Service Cancelled
The Memorial Day Service in Emily has been cancelled for the first time ever in its history. The Lakers Lions made the decision to follow the rules on large gatherings and are saddened that they can not honor the Veterans the way they have in the past several years.
American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Distribution Postponed
The Crosslake/Fifty Lakes America Legion Post 500 Auxiliary and Legion members usually distribute poppies in May outside local businesses in Crosslake. National Poppy Day is on May 22, 2020. As recommended by the Minnesota Department of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), poppy distribution and collection of donations has been postponed this year, due to the pandemic. Distribution will now occur in early July.
At the end of World War I, the American Legion adopted the poppy as a symbol of freedom and the blood sacrifice made by troops in wartime. The symbol comes from the poem In Flanders Field, written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, which movingly begins, “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, between the crosses row on row”. This refers to the poppies that sprang up in the churned-up earth of soldiers’ graves over parts of Belgium and France.
Over $2300 was collected by the Crosslake/Fifty Lakes American Legion Auxiliary in 2019 through poppy distribution and donations. These funds were used to support veteran’s programs such as the Veteran’s Child Welfare Foundation, Vet Rehabilitation, Shower Supplies for Vets, ALA Hospital Program, donating funds to wounded warriors and homeless vets, and other Auxiliary projects that specifically support veterans.
Watch for Auxiliary and Legion volunteers in early July, and wear your poppy proudly in honor of our fallen soldiers!
