COMMUNITY MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES

Web posted May 21, 2019
Crosslake 2019 Memorial Day Ceremony
The annual Memorial Day Ceremony, let by the Crosslake/Fifty Lakes American Legion Post 500, will be held at 10am on Monday, May 27th at the Crosslake Pinewood Cemetery.

The Ceremony will be highlighted this year with an address by our guest speaker, Dr. Robert Upggaard, who served in WWII as a Navy SeaBee, serving in both Europe and Pacific during the war. Prior to D-Day, his Seabee Battalion helped prepare Omaha Beach for the invasion. Dr. Upggaard still is a local resident and many of you may remember him as a Dentist in Pequot Lakes.

This annual ceremony is to honor and remember our deceased Military Veterans who served our country. There are over 180 of our local veterans buried at Pinewood that are identified with individual American Flags at their gravesite and will be recognized individually during the ceremony.

To begin the ceremony, during the raising of the flag, we are again pleased to have John Carlson share his talent with us by singing the National Anthem followed by our Crosslake Community School students laying a wreath at the base of the flag pole.

Father Blake Rozier, Pastor, Immaculate Heart Catholic Church will deliver the Invocation and Benediction.

The Ceremony will conclude with the Post Color Guard providing Military Honors with the traditional rifle salute and the playing of Taps. Please come (bring lawn chairs and umbrellas if there is the possibility of inclement weather) and help pay tribute to the deceased veterans who unselfishly served our country to preserve our freedom.

We are reminded that without the sacrifices these veterans made for our freedom, we would not have any other holidays to celebrate.

Crosslake Lutheran Church
Sunday, May 26, 2019
The annual Memorial Day service in Crosslake will be held Sunday May 26th at Crosslake Lutheran Church. A traditional worship service will be held at the church at 0830. At 1000 a community wide observance will be held at the Outdoor Worship Center on Daggett Pine Road across from the Crosslake Community Center baseball field. We expect a large attendance as in past years so you are invited to arrive early starting at 0930 for coffee, donuts and music in order to get all cars parked by the time of the service at 1000.

The outdoor service will feature the National Anthem sung by John Carlson, a contingent of American Legion veterans posting the colors and firing an honorary salute to the dead and an aerial fly-over by the North Star squadron, a group of four fixed wing aircraft flown by experienced pilots who participate in air shows throughout the Midwest. The leader of this squadron is Steve Knight, who has been an advisor to the Civil Air Patrol and now lives in Mission Hill, South Dakota.

Veterans from World War II to the present will be honored and the fallen remembered. Gold Star families will also be recognized. Those who attend the ceremony may stay in their cars and listen to the service over their car radio or sit on provided benches and chairs. You may want to bring your own blanket or chairs, pets are welcome.

The guest speaker is Dr. James Tuorila a licensed Psychologist whose clinical experience includes a 30 year career with the St. Cloud VA specializing in PTSD. He served in the US Army for 4 years, serving 13 months overseas with the Second Infantry Division on the DMZ in Korea. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sgt. in 1977. He has also served as an Adjunct faculty member at St. Cloud State University teaching multiple courses including Death and Dying. He was the Founder, Past President, pilot for Freedom flight Inc., and served in a variety of leadership roles for the VFW including the VFW National Surgeon General for three terms.
