Brainerd Lakes Health Announces Plans for New Baxter Medical Park

Brainerd Lakes Health (BLH), is pleased to announce the construction of a new clinic and outpatient services facility in Baxter. The new Baxter Medical Park will be part of Brainerd Lakes Health, the integrated health care network that encompasses St. Joseph's Medical Center (SJMC), Brainerd Medical Campus and the current SJMC regional clinics in Crosslake, Pillager, Pine River, Pequot Lakes, Pierz and Hackensack.

The Baxter Medical Park will be located on a 37-acre campus on the Highway 371 corridor south of the existing Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center. Brainerd Lakes Health owns the land and will be making additional investments in property improvements, including a new roadway. Construction on the new facility will begin in summer 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2011.

The Baxter Medical Park will be a 40,000 square foot facility. While final programming is still being planned, the facility will likely house an UrgentCARE location, outpatient clinics for physician practices including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Women’s/Children’s Services, and a Patient & Community Education department. The facility will offer ancillary services including a moderately complex laboratory, an Imaging Center that will provide general radiology services, and a retail pharmacy.

Development of the Baxter Medical Park is consistent with Brainerd Lakes Health’s commitment to improve quality and coordination of care and expand the scope of services available locally. Brainerd Lakes Health is exploring financing options for the approximately $8MM project.

“We are building the Baxter Medical Park in a way that we can continue to grow with the community,” said Thomas Prusak, CEO of Brainerd Lakes Health. “We have added thirty-three new medical practitioners in the last twelve months, have three new family practice physicians signed on to start with us in the coming year, and plans to recruit twenty-five more practitioners. We have run out of room to grow at our current locations. This new space will help us better serve the needs of our patients.”

The vision for the Baxter Medical Park includes a Phase II project within five years. Phase II may include expansion of primary care capabilities, addition of BLH specialty care, and possible space lease agreements for non-BLH partners in the medical community.
