| Essentia Health Emergency Team Completes Rural Trauma Team Development CourseWeb posted March 19, 2013 Nearly 30 healthcare providers including surgeons, emergency department physicians, registered nurses, pharmacists, laboratory staff, radiology staff, respiratory therapy staff, and paramedics participated in the Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center. This course was provided by the American College of Surgeons and instructed by Level 1 Trauma Center North Memorial trauma staff. "The American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Trauma understands that few people realize that while only 25 percent of our population lives in rural regions, more than 60 percent of the trauma deaths in America occur in these remote geographic segments of the country,” said Michael F. Rotondo, MD, FACS, Chair of Committee on Trauma for the American College of Surgeons. Developed by the Rural Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, this course focuses on three main points in both lecture and scenario: organization of the trauma receiving area, utilization of available resources, and regional system relationships for the most optimal outcomes for patients. Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd is a Level III Trauma Center, providing emergency medical services 24 hours a day, seven days a week through urgent care, emergency rooms and trauma surgery. Emergency specialists and physicians form a life-saving team caring for more than 26,000 patients per year through any situation, from minor injuries or illnesses to life-threatening conditions requiring immediate surgery. “It was a great opportunity to reinforce the current standard of trauma care and strengthen the teamwork needed to provide optimal trauma care,” said Dr. Ross Bengtson, Trauma Medical Director, Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center. “We participate in this extensive training for our patients and their families, so they can be confident that they are receiving the best care in emergency situations.” | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
