But resident Lisa Doerr, with help from her close friends and the Breezy Point Area Women’s Club, wasn’t going to let that happen. Together they made this year’s event, held August 29, a huge success. After moving to Breezy Point a few years ago, Doerr read that the event was going to be cancelled unless someone took it over. The Breezy Point Women's Club created the event four years ago, and the club coordinated it for the first three years. This year they decided they weren't able to do the event anymore so they looked for someone else to take over. Doerr stated that one of the main reasons she got involved was because of long time resident and former Pequot Lakes teacher Dorothy Yund. “She was my teacher in the fifth grade,” explained Doerr, “she is such a great person and created the idea for the event - she was really disappointed to hear it was going to be cancelled. When someone like that has given so much to the community - we certainly didn’t want to let her down - now it’s our turn.” “We figured that there was over 500 people at the event,” said Doerr. “It was a wonderful turnout and we had a beautiful day. Mayor JoAnn Weaver did a phenomenal job emceeing the event and Clarisse Blaiser was a huge help in getting the event going, her experience was invaluable.” Dunk tank volunteers included Breezy Point police chief Kevin Merschman, councilman Erik Lee, Chuck Beavers from Breezy Point Resort, former professional wrestler Chuck Lane and several PLHS football players. The resource tent had booths from several local organizations including the Pelican Lake Conservation Club, Breezy Point Area Women’s Club, Pelican Woods Cemetery Commission, Park and Recreation Association, Invasive Species Task Force, City of Breezy Point, the Thirty Lakes Watershed, Pequot Lakes PTA, Funbooks for Kids, Breezy Point Figure Skating Club, Central Lakes Hockey Association, Pequot Lakes Girls’ High School Hockey Team, Just for Kix, and the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office which offered fingerprinting for kids. The Fire Department displayed equipment and trucks and had a mock fire exhibit for kids. There was a craft tent where kids were able do a couple different crafts including tattoos and face painting, and the Fun Sisters of Pequot Lakes offered very popular glitter makeovers. There was a Wii gaming tent hosted by Play and Trade, and Pelican Square and Reed’s Market provided the hot dogs and buns. “The list of local businesses that contributed was long and we so appreciate their very generous donations for the raffle,” stated Doerr. “You wouldn’t think that there is a problem with the economy with the number of businesses that donated.” Doerr was quick to thank the committee and around 30 volunteers that assisted with the event, “I couldn’t have done this without my family and friends, and all the great volunteers.” | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
