Assisted Living Center to Open in Crosslake

The newly constructed Golden Horizons assisted living center will be hosting an open house on Saturday, July 19. The center will offer a choice for residents concerning housing and will provide the opportunity to residents who wish to stay in the area, but perhaps can no longer care for their property.

Crosslake resident Chuck Lane, and his business partner and summer resident Kent Marthaler comprise KC Companies, who are constructing the center located on East Shore Drive off County Road 3 south of downtown Crosslake.

Lane said, “We feel blessed to have the opportunity to provide a unique service to seniors who live in Crosslake and surrounding communities. I have always felt that seniors deserve housing choices and until now they have been very limited in this area.”

“Crosslake has an excellent clinic, dental facilities, chiropractors, pharmacy, physical therapist, churches, retailers and a great ambulance service,” Lane continued. “We are becoming a self-contained community, and that in itself is exciting.”

“Our company has always built in small communities and this has been our niche,” said Lane. “I have learned through years of building in these smaller communities, that seniors would prefer to stay where they have lived, because of family, friends or their close ties to the community.”

Golden Horizons has a network of employees throughout the state of Minnesota and Iowa. Since starting the company has grown from 13 employees in 1996 to over 150.

“We have made many changes throughout the years and this comes from the insight we receive from our wonderful staff,” stated Lane.

Nancy Vernon was recently hired as administrator for the Crosslake center. A registered nurse who came from St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, Vernon’s experience included time in the medical/surgical, psychiatric, and telemetry units.

The Crosslake location of Golden horizons will employ over 20 full and part-time employees.

The center is located in a quiet residential neighborhood on three acres within walking distance of Cross Lake and the Whitefish chain. Residents will enjoy beautifully landscaped grounds that feature walkways, flower gardens and a waterfall, patio areas, and even an area to have evening bon fires.

The center has many indoor amenities including a grand fireplace, in house library, café, and grand theatre room. Fresh popcorn will also be available for special movie nights.

Some of the other amenities are the activity room, church chapel, sun room, beauty barber shop, whirlpool therapy room. One of the most delightful areas at Golden horizons assisted living is the elegant dinning room where residents will order off a menu and receive home cooked meals daily.

Every resident will receive a lifeline pendant when they move in so if they have an emergency, staff will be able to respond in a quick and efficient manner 24/7. The building has a security camera system because we know security, safety and piece of mind mean so much.

Golden Horizons assisted living has 16 one-bedroom apartments with full kitchen, living room, bedroom and private bathroom. There are also six private studio suites with kitchenette and private bathroom.

Lane said there would be many activities for residents including bingo, bible trivia, bowling, cards, exercise, Wii, gardening, and special field trips.

“We believe an active lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle,” added Lane.

The Specialty/Memory care is a unique part of the center that is attached to the assisted living area. The doors will be locked and secured 24/7 to ensure the families that their loved one is living in a safe secure building. Our specialty/memory care has a highly trained staff that has received specialized training to care for seniors who are dealing with physical limitations, dementia, and or Alzheimer’s.

Lane said that the Specialty/Memory care unit is not just for residents dealing with cognitive impairments, but also those dealing with physical limitations.

“Until recently, seniors have been limited in their options to receive such care,” said Lane. “Generally, a nursing home was the only option. Our specialty/memory care costs less then a nursing home and is an inviting place that is a lot like home.”

The Specialty/Memory care unit has a welcoming and unique design where residents can enjoy the spacious living room with a stone fireplace. Just off the residential style kitchen is a beautiful dining room. Residents can enjoy the sun and plant flowers in flowerbeds in a secured courtyard. Other activities are available for groups and individuals.

Golden Horizons specialty/memory care has eleven private suites with private bathrooms and two semi private suites with private bathrooms.

Many amenities in the Specialty/Memory care unit include laundry and housecleaning service, shower supervision, 24 hour attendants, planned activities and outings, RN supervision and coordination of laboratory orders and results, Coordination of medical appointments, scheduled transportation with escort, and utilities and more.

Golden Horizons is also associated with senior class home health care out of Pequot Lakes. “We feel very fortunate to have a home health care agency that can support our staff as well as provide nursing services to our residents,” stated Lane. “Together our RN and the home health RN work side by side to make sure that our residents will receive the best service possible.”

The open house will be held Saturday, July 19th from 11 am to 3 pm with food and refreshments. At 1 pm there will be a drawing for a TV and other door prizes. For more information on Golden Horizons, contact Chuck Lane at 218 692-6640.
