Daybreak to play Crosslake Outdoor Music Series

Next on stage in the Crosslake Outdoor Music Series is Daybreak, a five-person Brainerd-based band playing a wide variety of music. They’ll play Saturday, June 28 at 7 p.m. in Town Square.

Between its five members, the band has 220 years of musical experience. Three of the musicians share a long-time bond. According to Jim Hanson, bassist, keyboardist and vocalist for the group, he and two other members of the band first formed Daybreak in 1977.

Hanson, along with guitarist Dick Wilt and vocalist Leisha Kaye, played six nights a week in Brainerd in the ‘70s, eventually going separate ways, but remaining friends.

They reconnected almost 30 years later and continue to play in the lakes area. Anchored by Wilt, who is a Minnesota Rock and Roll and Country Hall of Fame guitarist, the band plays a wide variety of music. Wilt plays renditions of many crowd favorites and is known in part for his talent on the steel guitar.

Kaye has been performing since she was a teenager, and is loved for her voice on swing tunes and popular standards. Hanson plays hits like big band and rock tunes, singing the songs of rock’s top male vocalists.

Joining the trio is Pat Scrimshaw, who provides harmonica saxaphone and vocals. Scrimshaw was one of several drummers in the band in the ‘70s, when Scrimshaw would drum and play harmonica at the same time. He’s now free to focus on the harmonica (or vocals or saxaphone) as the band is joined by drummer Joe Yager, one of the top drummers in the Midwest.

The band plans to play a collection of hits from the ‘40s to today, including Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Sinatra and Michael Buble. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, or just your dancing shoes to town square to catch the show.

The Crosslake Outdoor Music Series performance schedule includes: Daybreak on June 28, Shane Martin on July 5, Boss Grant: Johnny Cash Revue on July 12, Dred I Dread on July 19, Decade 7 on July 26, Patty and the Buttons on Aug. 2, Boss Grant: Johnny Cash Revue on Aug. 9, Jacob Martin Band on Aug. 16, Daybreak on Aug. 23 and Decade 7 on Aug. 30. All shows begin at 7 p.m.
