| The Story of "Freddie" the LoonSubmitted by Craig Rhymers of Crosslake Here's a heart warming story of a little loon baby that somehow managed to get stranded in our driveway. My wife, Deb tells the story so well. She heard the loon parents in front of our dock calling all morning, and thought it to be unusual. Then, when she went out front to water her flowers, she saw this fuzzy little baby loon in the driveway. He hopped a few times, but couldn't make it back to the lake....the house was in his way. When Deb found him, she tried to pick him up and got pecked. So she called our neighbor, Sue Swanson, to help. They got some winter gloves, scooped him up, and carried him to the lake, some 100 feet. Once in the water, he took a huge drink, then dove under and came up to shake off. Then (the story gets cute) he flapped his wings and literally ran on top of the water out to his waiting parents. When his mom saw him, she came towards him, opened her wings and pulled him in. A little while later, Deb got the binoculars and saw him on top of his mom's back. Deb and Sue named him "Freddie." This happened on the 4th of July weekend. Freddie is a big loon now and trying to fly. He's getting a white chest and his head is turning black. How he got into the driveway will always be a mystery. He didn't have any injuries, and the dogs were in the kennel. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
