Let Me Tell You A Story

By Mike Holst

In the years that I have written for the Northland Press, I have led a double writing life that most of you readers have become aware of. Besides the columns, I also write fiction novels. My columns and my novels are two very different forms of writing, but I must confess I enjoy doing both of them very much. Although the books are a lot of work to prepare, it’s so rewarding to me to see them in print. Where am I going with this you ask? Well I am going to tell you about a book that I wrote this past year that is just being released to stores, and going on the net sites this week. It is called “The Magic Book.”

‘The ‘Magic Book’ is a whole new direction for me in writing and I think you will agree when you read it, and I think you will like it. Unlike my other stories, which were mysteries or adventure fiction, ‘The Magic Book’ is a trip into what may seem like fantasy, but is it really? The story takes place in St. Paul MN, so it is still a Minnesota story, but it also takes place in part in 1918, and at the same time the 1970’s. This time change becomes a mystical part of the story that will amaze you. This book is also good for the whole family to read. I know some of my books are somewhat adult oriented. Most of my books take years to get ready, but this story took me about six weeks. I am often my own fiercest critic when it comes to the plots in my books, and I make a lot of changes before I’m done with them, but this one had very few revisions. I loved it that much the first time around. It’s not a big book or an overly expensive one. It would make a nice stocking stuffer for someone special for Christmas. Go see Diane at Havens or Lakes Area Crafts for your signed copies.

So that being said I am going to share the prologue from the book with you, just to spike your interest.

Prologue:
On a dark and dusty bookshelf, in a long forgotten bookstore in downtown St.Paul, Minnesota, there laid an old nondescript manuscript. Yellowed with age and long forgotten, it lay there in waiting for a chance to tell its story. Had overly shy, young Jennifer Crawford known what supernatural things would happen when she started reading that story, she would have never opened it. But she did, and she was taken on a strange and bizarre journey, to another time and another place. It wasn’t the place, the time, or the journey that was so strange. It was her involvement in it, and the part she seemed to willingly play in the story that was so troubling.

So come along with Jenny on a literary trip, to a time and a place and a world almost forgotten. A rendezvous with a mysterious man she never knew-- or did she? Was he real, or was he somehow born from the depths of her subconscious mind?

Now on Monday the 14th of Dec. I will be at the Crosslake Library to showcase my new book, so come and see me, and lets talk. 1.30 p.m is the time the event is free and refreshments will be served. Now just for putting up with that, next week I am going to have a funny column I’ve been saving for a long time.

Editor’s note: In addition to “Magic Book”, Mike will also be discussing his previous book, “Justice for Adam” at the Crosslake Area Library Book Talk session.

Mike is a member of the Moose River Writers Alliance. Copies of his books will be available for purchase and signing.
