Ice Car Racing returns for 2014 season
Web posted January 21, 2014
If any of the drivers had white knuckles during the second Crosslake Ice Car race of the season on Saturday, Jan 18., it was not from the cold. Conditions on Big Pine Lake were sunny and there was very little wind.
It was a slippery day at the track as several cars slid into the snowbanks that surround the oval track.
Twenty-one of the day's twentyfive entries finished the features.
In the studded class feature race, the Superman car driven by Shawn Pratt took an early lead and held it for the entire race. In second place was Matt Borden and finishing third was Drew Seeker.
In the 15 and under feature race, Logan Pratt held the lead from start to finish. Noah Blakeman in the #88 car went into the snow bank on the north turn and the red flag came out while his car was pulled back onto the track. The race resumed and Connor Pratt moved into second place in the third lap. Jake Borden finished third.
In the rubber feature, three drivers fought hard for the lead, often less than one car length separating them. The race was interrupted when the car driven by Jeff Martz became embedded in the snow on the north turn. In a photo finish, Steve Omann took first, followed by Matt Borden and Sarah Hines took third.
Races are held every Saturday on Big Pine Lake at noon, weather and conditions permitting. The public is encouraged to attend the free races. Access to the track is located at the Big Pine Lake public access, located off Big Pine Trail off County Road 3 south of Crosslake. - photos by Paul Boblett
