Families are the stars at Night Under the Stars
Web posted July 8, 2014
The Garaghty family from Zimmerman, Minnesota sends their thank yous to the folks who support Camp Knutson with their attendance at “Night Under the Stars” on July 19th on the beautiful Camp Knutson Campgrounds in Crosslake.
This annual event, with other special events at the Camp, help families like the Garaghty's send there three children with Down Syndrome for a week of camping on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. Byron and Kari Garaghty have adopted five children with Down Syndrome who range in age from 6 months to 12 years. They were looking for a camping experience that was safe, fun and welcoming to their ten, eleven, and twelve year old kids. They found all they were looking for and more at Camp Knutson.
When the Garaghty's were asked 'Why did you adopt children with Down Syndrome?' Kari answered quietly but firmly. She said they were faced with some infertility issues and because of family experience with another relative with Down Syndrome, they committed to these children with this special need. They quickly learned that children with Down Syndrome are usually placed in gender specific group homes when they reach adulthood. To serve kids of both genders and to keep these children together as adults, the answer was simple for the Garaghty's: Adopt!
