Students Decorate The Nest for Earth Day
Get the Lead Out Campaign on Screen
National Loon Center News
Web posted May 4, 2021
We're excited to officially open "The Nest" soon to the public on the Town Square in Crosslake, Minnesota. The fun and educational venue will feature National Loon Center merchandise and plenty of information on our progress. As we continue to plan for the building of our state-of-the-art facility, the NLC is actively launching several programs this year advancing loon and freshwater research and education.
Crosslake Community School students visited "The Nest" on Earth Day and added their own artistic interpretations of healthy shoreland and freshwater ecosystems. We're grateful to that impressive group of young world-changers for their contributions to The Nest.
The National Loon Center is proud to support the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCA) "Get the Lead Out" campaign, which aims to decrease loon and swan mortalities resulting from lead poisoning as these and other birds ingest lead-based fishing jigs and sinkers. We're working with the MPCA and our own Scientific Loon Council member Mark Pokras to develop an interactive Get the Lead Out exhibit to be placed at the future Center site on Cross Lake this year. We'll have more news on that Widseth-designed exhibit soon!
Learn more about the Get the Lead Out campaign by watching an upcoming episode of Prairie Sportsman's “Flatheads and Get the Lead Out” at the following times: Pioneer PBS Sunday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m; KSMQ April 29 at 7:30 p.m.; TPT Life May 1 at 12:30 p.m.; Lakeland PBS May 29 at 2:30 p.m.; WDSE June 12 at 4 p.m.; the MN Channel on all stations May 6 at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Our angling and wildlife legacies will endure as we make smart choices for the future.
