Crosslake Model Train Club Ready for Summer Visitors
Web posted July 8, 2014
Looking for a fun activity? Come to the Northern Trackers model railroad club and see the trains and layouts. We have memberoperators wearing badges around their necks to answer railroading questions you might have. Our HO historical layout is so authentic with mining and lumbering displays you will think you are back to the years of 1905 - 1930. There are many local towns and lakes you will recognize. The Oscale layout features a scale model of the St. Paul Union Depot, a circus, a little town, a lumbering yard, and more. There is also a new, G scale train (Garden Train) under construction and running outdoors.
Outside the building we have a half size model of the Wm Crooks engine and cars. The Wm Crooks was the first train engine to run in Minnesota. Kids can climb aboard the scale model -it is a great place to take a picture to remember your trip to Crosslake and the train exhibits. We will be holding a Wm Crooks Day celebration on August 30th, with a band, information and a presentation about the history of the Wm Crooks train provided by the man who built the scale model.
Indoors, there is a store where you may purchase an engineer’s hat, shirt, books, train whistles and other railroad memorabilia. A children’s layout is also available for young train engineers to operate. There are whistles to blow and a real telegraph on which to learn Morse code. And, you can participate in a scavenger hunt.
The club is currently selling raffle tickets to win a complete 4’ by 8’ O scale model railroad layout. It’s very cool! This raffle will raise money for our operating expenses. Come to the club to view the layout and purchase your tickets. The estimated value of the layout is over $1,000; raffle tickets are only $5.00 each. The drawing will be held on December 6th, 2014, (just before Christmas).
If you are interested in learning about and building a model train layout or in operating a model train, the NMRHA is offering a one-time, 6 month trial membership. The offer is open through August. The club members will work with you and teach you how to build a layout, make trees, to wire the layout, program and operate the trains; and you will make lots of new friends in the process.
The club is open to the public. We hope you will take time to visit our railroad displays at 35170 County Road 3, Crosslake. Our summer hours are Wednesday 4pm-7pm, Saturday 10 am–2 pm, and Sunday from 12pm–3 pm. If you are a large group of 10 or more people, and would like to schedule a special visit, please call 218-821-8357.
We will be waiting for all you train enthusiasts to see the club and to join in the fun. ALL ABOARD!
