All God’s Creatures Got a Place in the Choir

By Beth Larson, Staff Writer

This certainly was the case at Crosslake Lutheran’s outdoor worship service held on June 15, 2008. The worship service was decidedly noisier than usual, punctuated by the whining and occasional barking of the dogs in attendance.

This was the 11th annual Blessing of the Animal Service. Pastor Mark Anderson stated, “It is a lot of fun for me to see all the beautiful animals that are so well loved and cared for by their owners. This reminds us of how gently and tenderly God cares for and loves each one of us.”

Pastor Mark blessed a total of fifty-eight dogs and two cats, each by name. After the blessing and water-sprinkling, each dog was rewarded with a treat. Younger members of the congregation were involved in handing out the doggie treats. In one case, a rock was blessed in lieu of the much-loved family dog at home with cancer. One couple presented a beanie baby dog, and received a blessing for themselves as well. In the past horses and small pets in cages have also been blessed.

One church member stated, “Some people feel that this kind of thing has no place at church, but just look at all this involvement!” Indeed, members and visitors alike were enthusiastic about presenting their pets for God’s blessing.

Pets and fathers (it was father’s day) were honored at this service.

Crosslake Evangelical Lutheran Church has offered a special outdoor worship service for the many vacationers in our area since 1965. All are invited to participate in this ministry.

The church has several upcoming events, including a Classic Car Sunday on July 20, Biker’s Sunday on August 3, Camp Knutson Sunday on August 10, and the annual Outdoor Picnic on August 24.
