Area artists support Camp Knutson’s Quilt Auction

Web posted August 8, 2017
A number of artistic quilted wall hangings designed and constructed by talented Crosslake and Emily area quilters will be available at the Camp Knutson Quilt Auction on Saturday, August 12, 2017. Three wall hangings are of special note because of their unique design and construction.

A Crosslake artist created “Great Horned Owl” and “Winter Red Fox” utilizing painted fabric and a trapunto technique to give the 25 by 25-inch scenes a threedimensional look. Trapunto, Italian for "to quilt," is a quilting method using multiple layers of fabric and special stitching to emboss the surface of the quilted fabric. Both items are ready to hang.

An Emily quilter contributed “Dashing through the Snow,” an exquisite 30 by 30-inch wall hanging that depicts a scene similar to those in a Currier and Ives print of long ago. Although at first glance the wall hanging looks like the scene is painted, close examination will reveal the artist used a thread painting technique. This embroidery technique uses closely spaced machine stitched colored threads to create the picture.

This year’s quilt auction will feature over 250 items in the silent and live auctions. Antique quilts, children’s quilts, Christmas and Halloween items, patriotic quilts, and other smaller quilted items are featured.

The Camp Knutson Quilt Auction will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11148 Manhattan Pt. Blvd. in Crosslake, Minnesota. The viewing of the quilts and the silent auction will occur from 9:30 – 11:30 AM. The live auction will start at noon.

Absentee bidding for these quilts is available for individuals who cannot attend the auction. Bids must be received by Jared Griffin before 12:00 noon on August 11, 2017. Contact Jared Griffin at jared.griffin@lssmn.org.

Camp Knutson of Lutheran Social Service serves children with identified needs. The auction is coordinated by the Paul Bunyan Auxiliary of Lutheran Social Service. The Camp Knutson Quilt Auction and the recent Night Under the Stars are the two major summer fundraisers benefitting Camp Knutson.
