Scale Model of the William Crooks Locomotive and a Tender Car - photo submitted

Train club to hold Wm. Crooks Day event Aug. 30th

Web posted August 26, 2014
The William Crooks Locomotive was the first locomotive to operate in the state of Minnesota. It was built between 1861 and 1865, and it first provided service a year later in 1862 for the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, a rail line that eventually became part of the Great Northern Railway.

On Saturday, August 30th, 2014 the Northern Minnesota Railroad Heritage Association (NMRHA) in Crosslake is holding a Wm Crooks Day History Event to educate the public on the history of the Wm Crooks Locomotive. The half-size scale model of the Wm Crooks shown  in the photo is permanently on display outdoors at the NMRHA model train club. Children love to climb aboard and get their picture taken.

The Wm Crooks Day event will include a presentation by the man who built the scale model, Robert Victor Wilde; and a short presentation by the President of the train club, providing information about the club. The Last Generation Band will play music, and the club members will offer lemonade and cookies to the visitors.

Come to the event and come inside the club to see the trains and layouts. We have member-operators that will answer railroading questions you might have. Our HO historical layout is so authentic with mining and lumbering displays you will think you are back to the years of 1905 - 1930. There are many local towns and lakes you will recognize. The O-scale layout features a scale model of the St. Paul Union Depot, a circus, a little town, a lumbering yard, and more. There is also a new, G scale train (Garden Train) under construction and running outdoors.

The Wm Crooks Day event will run from 12:45 to 2:00 on Saturday, August 30th. The club is located at 35170 County Road 3, Crosslake. Our summer hours are Wednesday 4pm-7pm, Saturday 10 am–2 pm, and Sunday from 12pm–3 pm. For more information about the club or the Wm Crooks Day please call 218-821-8357.
