Partnership to tackle Buckthorn, an Invasive Species
Web posted October 15, 2013
The Crow Wing SWCD is partnering with Conservation Corps of Minnesota, Crow Wing Power and Crow Wing County to tackle terrestrial invasive species called Buckthorn. Buckthorn is a shrub or a small tree that out competes with native plants for food, light, and water, decreases wildlife habitat, and lacks natural control.
During the week of October 14- 18, 2013, we will be working at two different sites over the two days. Volunteers are encourage to attend to learn methods of how treat Buckthorn.
Tuesday, October 15: The crew will be on the new Buffalo Trail in Brainerd (from Kiwanis Park to Buffalo Hills Park) from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
Wednesday, October 16: Turn In Poachers (TIP) site (the old Paul Bunyan Nature Learning Center) at 7187 Wise Road in Brainerd, from 12 noon until 4:30pm.
Volunteers please wear long pants, long sleeved shirts, gloves, and eye protection (i.e.: sunglasses). Bring water and lunch, as we will be away from facilities. This is a great opportunity to learn methods to control Buckthorn and help a worthy cause.
