Grant Brings Sales Tax Dollars to Crow Wing County

Web posted February 21, 2012
The Crow Wing Soil and Water District (SWCD) will be receiving $ 150,000 dollars from the Clean Water Fund through a grant from the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR). The Clean Water Funds were established through the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment approved by voters in 2008.

In fall of 2011, the competitive grant applications were submitted by cities, counties, soil and water conservation districts, watershed districts, and watershed management organizations. The applications were reviewed and ranked by an interagency team that included BWSR, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

“We are very excited for this opportunity to not only bring locally paid sales tax dollars back to Crow Wing County (CWC) but also to allow local citizens and community organizations to access the Clean Water funds and determine how they are spent” said Melissa Barrick, SWCD District Manager.

This initiative is titled Brainerd Lakes Community-Centered Stormwater Reduction Mini-Grant Program. The 2008 Crow Wing County Water Plan will help prioritize activities for funding. The SWCD will accept proposals from lake associations, faith organizations, businesses, school groups, citizen groups, and nonprofits for projects to reduce stormwater runoff and improve lakes and streams in Crow Wing County. Groups in all parts of CWC are eligible; proposed projects do not have to be located on a lake or stream.

“Stormwater Reduction Mini-Grants will empower citizens of CWC to protect water quality. We will see long-term benefits from these citizen projects” said Beth Hippert, SWCD District Technician.

The SWCD request for proposals will be available in March 2012.

For more information on this project contact Melissa Barrick by phone 218-828-6197 or e-mail melissa.barrick@co.crow-wing.mn.us or visit www.co.crow-wing.mn.us/swcd/.
