Deerwood Man convicted of Illegal Possession of Firearms and other crimes

Web posted June 24, 2014
The Cass County Attorney’s Office announces that Carl Andrew Raba (age 43) was convicted by a Cass County jury of four counts of Ineligible Person in Possession of a Firearm, one Count of Fifth Degree Controlled Substance Crime, and one count of Receiving Stolen Property with a Value of More than $5,000. The trial commenced on June 17 in the Cass County Courthouse in Walker.

During the three day trial, the jury heard evidence that on November 13, 2013, Deputy Charles Ratz and Sergeant Jason Brogle of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office went to an address in southern Cass County in an effort to locate a woman with warrants. Upon their arrival they observed a man standing outside a camper trailer. Upon seeing the Deputies, the man ran into the trailer and locked himself inside. The Deputies attempted to make contact; however, the male would not respond to repeated requests. The male’s identity was eventually ascertained as being Carl Andrew Raba and it was learned that he had several warrants for his arrest out of Crow Wing County. Law enforcement entered the trailer and found Raba sitting on a bed next to a Ruger 10/22 rifle. Because of a prior felony conviction for a crime of violence, Raba is not eligible to possess firearms. Raba was taken into custody and numerous ammunition cartridges were found on his person. Two more firearms (a shortened Browning .270 rifle and a Stevens Model 56) were also found where Raba had been sitting. The controlled substance methamphetamine was also located. Further investigation revealed that the camper trailer Raba was found in had been stolen from Crow Wing County. Two all-terrain vehicles located outside were stolen, as well as multiple trailers and numerous items of person property, including a stolen pistol. In total, property from at least eight victims was recovered at this location.

After the verdict was received, Raba was remanded into the custody of the Cass County Sheriff pending sentencing. Sentencing is scheduled to take place on July 28 at 1:00 p.m.
