Emily/Outing GIA ATV Trail Approved
Web posted October 8, 2013
Effective August 1, 2013, the Minnesota Trails and Assistance Program, known as GIA, has approved funding for a 56-mile Emily to Outing to Moose River All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Trail in Cass and Crow Wing Counties. Cass County is the sponsor of this new trail system and will provide trail development and maintenance in cooperation with the Over the Hills Gang ATV Club. A portion of this new trail connects the cities of Emily and Outing along Trunk Highway 6, and provides access to businesses and hospitality services in these communities. The trail also connects these cities to the existing Moose River ATV Trail and through the Moose River Connector to the Soo Line North ATV corridor trail.
The trail utilizes existing forest roads and trails located within the Land O Lakes Forest, county, township, and municipal roads along with a short segment of private land. ATV use is currently allowed on the new trail, but adding the trail to the Grant-in-Aid system will provide additional funding for trail signs, informational kiosks, maps, monitoring, repairs and on-going maintenance. The Over the Hills Gang ATV Club plans to maintain this trail for recreational use by Class I and Class II ATV’s from May 1st to November 1st of each year, unless otherwise authorized, or prohibited, by the DNR, Cass County, or other public land manager.
Over the Hills Gang ATV Club President, Meri Lysne, states that this trail is an important economic development piece for the Cass and Crow Wing County areas. We have numerous ATV’s coming up on the weekends wanting to camp, patronize local businesses, and ride ATV’s. This trail will designate a legal place to ride, it will be maintained to protect rider safety, and will help sustain our forest environment.
Special thanks are extended to Joshua Stevenson, Cass County Land Commissioner, and to Dave Schotzko, DNR Parks and Trails Area Supervisor for guiding the Over the Hills Gang ATV Club through the GIA application and approval process. This has been a 3-year effort, and only through the cooperation and guidance from the Cass County and MN State DNR teams has this trail become a reality and a new recreational destiny for all Minnesota and out-of-state ATV riders. Official opening of the trail is currently planned for June 2014.
