Emily United Methodist Church Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Emily United Methodist Church, the oldest congregation in Emily, will celebrate 100 hundred years of service to the Emily area on Sunday, May 18. Bishop Sally Dyck, episcopal leader of the Minnesota Annual Conference, will preach at the special 10:00 am service. A luncheon follows at Emily City Hall. The day’s events are part of year-long observation.

Previous pastors and members, as well as persons with past connections to the church and clergy from neighboring churches, have been invited. Emily UMC’s sister church in Pine River will participate in the service and assist with the luncheon. The Rev. Lois Hansen is pastor of both churches.

The church was founded by homesteaders in 1908 and met in the first school house beginning in 1900. Several descendents of original members are part of the current congregation which still meets in the original 1911 building.

An updated history of the church is being written. Photos and memorabilia will be on display during the luncheon. Anyone in the area who has information for the history or items to loan for the display is asked to contact the church at premium@uslink.net.
