The US Postal Service recently issued an emergency closing of the Fifty Lakes Post Office, due to the planned demolition of the Fifty Lakes Store building. (The Post office moved into the building in July 1989.) The USPS has proposed conversion to a “Village Post Office” (VPO) which includes outdoor post office boxes and limited counter service at the City Hall. On Tuesday, the Fifty Lakes City Council approved creation of the new VPO. The Council will look into building a heated “bus stopstyle” shelter to house the mail boxes, which have already been installed outside the City Hall.
On Friday, just hours before the permanent closing of the Fifty Lakes Post Office, neighbors presented outgoing Postmaster Donna Snyder with a cake and flowers in appreciation of her many years of service to the community. Jeanne Coffin, an 80-year resident of Fifty Lakes said, “I can’t believe I’ll never set foot in this Post Office again. It’s sad to see it, and Donna, go! We’ll miss her around here.” Postmaster Snyder accepted a transfer to the Outing Post Office.
