Central Minnesota’s Mid Distance Sled Dog Race

The communities of Emily, Outing and Remer along with volunteer organizers of the Mid MN 150 Sled Dog race are preparing to host Central Minnesota’s only mid distance sled dog race. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 13th with many viewing and interaction opportunities for the public.

The Mid MN 150 has historically involved some of the sports top mushers along with recreational teams who may be racing competitively for the first time. Sled dog racing has a rich history in the Northern United States and organizers look forward to sharing their passion with those interested in learning about the equipment, dogs and culture.

According to race organizer, Al Larson, “the dogs are very similar to human athletes, they have to train hard to develop endurance and they are very competitive. The musher must know his dogs well as they each have different personalities and strengths. Only by working together can the team of dogs and musher be successful.”

The race will begin with pro-class teams consisting of 8 dogs and musher at the Bungalow in Emily, MN at 9:00am on Saturday. The sounds of yelping dogs will fill the air with excitement prior to the start of the race. Teams will travel first to Outing for a mandatory 1 hour break and then proceed to Remer where they will end their 75 mile journey at approximately 3:00pm.

Recreational Class racers will begin their race at the Village Inn in Outing, MN at noon. Teams consisting of 6 dogs and musher will travel approximately 30 miles to the finish line in Remer where they will be greeted by handlers, families and spectators. Spectators are invited to see the preparation and set up for each team prior to the staggered start.

Following both races, the public is invited to join mushers and teams for a chili dinner and awards banquet at the Remer Fire Hall.

The Mid MN 150 Sled Dog Race is organized through volunteer efforts and additional help is being sought for each of the race locations. For further race information or to volunteer, go to www.midmn150.org.
