Lightning Split with Magic, Rebels

By Paul Boblett, Editor

The Lightning split their games to even their record at 3-3 this past week, losing 4-1 at Monticello on Tuesday then rebounding for a 4-1 win over Moose Lake Area Rebels on Thursday at the Hallet Center in Crosby.

Magic 4, Lightning 1
Conner Chambers scored the lone Northern Lakes goal against Monticello, who outshot the Lightning 19-3 in the first period. Joey Bergquist stopped 32 of 26 shots for the Lightning.

Gage Torrel scored twice for Monticello.

The Lightning was playing without leading scorer Sam Johnson who was a scratch due to illness.

“They jumped all over us in the first period,” said coach Shawn Chambers. “It was similar to the Detroit Lakes game (a season opening 6-1 loss), we chased them around in our defensive zone.”

Lightning 4, Rebels 1
Sam Johnson scored twice for the Lightning and Joey Bergquist made 27 saves in a 4-1 win over Moose Lake Area.

Kyler Decent set up the Lighting’s first goal as attempted a wraparound but Alec Fitch got a stick on the puck and it got past Moose Lake goalie Austin Lanoue to give the Lighting a 1-0 lead.

Later in the first period, Conner Chambers took a pass from Collin Burke near the blue line and put the puck between Lanoue’s legs to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Bergquist earned a rare assist for a goaltender on Chambers tally.

Johnson scored the next two goals and the Lightning pulled away from the Rebels.

The first came shorthanded as Johnson took a pass at center ice from Cody Chambers and slipped the puck past Lanoue. His second tally came on the power-play, also assisted by Cody Chambers.

“We’re young and making small steps in the right direction but we need to shoot the puck more,” said coach Chambers. “We had control in their zone for a good part of the game, we’re just not generating enough shots.”

“Joey made some great saves for us, it could have been a shootout,” added Chambers. The Lighting will host their annual Holiday tournament at Breezy Point Arena Dec. 28-30. Other teams include Red Lake, Bagley and Morris.
