Mary Blexrud of the Nisswa Chamber with paver

Beautification Project in Nisswa

The Nisswa Chamber of Commerce grounds will get a major face-lift this summer. The beautification project includes sod, fieldstone walking paths, planters with flowers and brick pavers.

Hall Landscaping and Dock Service of Nisswa devised the two-phase project with chamber officials and the Nisswa Garden Club.

Weather permitting, phase 1 of the project will begin in a few weeks and will include placing sod around the chamber building, with fieldstone pathways south of the chamber building that will be wide enough for strollers and wheelchairs.

Phase 1 is being paid for with donations from the Nisswa Lions, Nisswa Women of Today, and Nisswa Chamber of Commerce. The chamber hopes to start Phase 2 this fall.

Phase 2 will include three different sized pavers around the chamber building. The largest pavers, at 6 by 9 inches, are being sold for $100 each. The pavers can be engraved with the wording of the buyer’s choice. Some suggestions include family names, names in memory, family celebrations, cherished pets, Nisswa Chamber businesses, and special dates. Engravings can be up to three lines of 12-15 spaces per line. Pavers are available to individuals, families, nonprofits, and Nisswa Chamber members.

Forms to buy engraved pavers are available at the chamber building on Main Street. The chamber's goal is to sell enough pavers by July 15 so phase 2 can begin this fall. Forms for the engraved pavers are available at the Nisswa Chamber office. The price of pavers will go up slightly after July 15.

Ideas for a name for the Paver Project are being sought. The winner will receive a free engraved paver. In the event of duplicates, a name will be drawn. Submit your choice of a name to the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce by Memorial Day.

The beautification project also includes a sprinkler system.

"So we will be able to keep this watered," said Blexrud. "A lot of the problem in the past is we weren't able to get out and water. This will eliminate the grounds going dry." The chamber is working closely with the Nisswa Garden Club. As in the past, the club will maintain the two planters on either side of the gazebo. It also will take care of plantings around the gazebo and on the south side of the chamber building.

Susan Mezzenga, executive director of the Nisswa chamber, said, "We could not have done this without the work of the Nisswa Garden Club and the generosity of the Nisswa Lions Club and Nisswa Women of Today. It is going to be an exciting time for people to be involved in a very touching and personal project."
