Members of the Lake Washburn Association gathered at the DNR Public Landing early Saturday morning to assist in the cleanup of County Road 48. The LWA participates in the Minnesota Adopt-A-Highway program covering a 3.5 mile stretch of CR 48. Twice a year, LWA Members volunteer to collect trash along the road and into the ditches. This Labor Day weekend there were 18 participants.
That same afternoon, the LWA hosted its annual Floating Ice Cream Social. Captain Dave Patterson guided the ice cream boat (donated by Ron and Nancy Reich) into a quiet bay in the main body of Lake Washburn, and the crew, headed by First Mate Eleanor Patterson, quickly began dispensing ice cream bars and informational packets to the eagerly awaiting patrons. Boats with smaller children received gift bags which included a Find-A-Fish puzzle, fish magnet, a water safety comic book and Minnesota fish poster. This year, dog desserts were also handed out to every watercraft with furry friends onboard. Over 50 boats cruised in and a few even circled back for seconds! The “drive up window” closed after an hour and a couple dock deliveries were made to Iowa Camp, Bear Paw and into Birch Bay to empty the cargo hold of the remaining delectable frozen treats. Summer is sweeter when it ends with ice cream on the lake.
