Outing Volunteer Library received 850 books donated by Larry Dingman, Antiquarian Books, delivered from New Prague by Bill Stevens, Roosevelt Lake, and Larry - photo submitted

Outing Volunteer Library Fall 2008 Update

This past summer was a busy season for the Outing Volunteer Library, with a significant increase in usage from 2007 to 2008. The library has grown in size from 12,000 books and tapes in 2007 to over 17,000 in 2008.

The Story Times for children on Wednesday and Saturday are well attended and a joy for the volunteer book readers. The board is thrilled to have so many children interested in books.

The addition of the second bay of the old Outing Volunteer Fire Dept building to the Outing Volunteer Library is complete, thanks to the Outing Chamber of Commerce, our local contractors and our volunteers.

Donations of money and books continue to come to the library, including one from an estate and another from an antique book dealer in New Prague.

The public is encouraged to visit the new kid’s area and expansion.

It was a very successful summer from a fundraising standpoint. They raised $355 from a used book sale on August 2. Next came a fundraiser at the Outing Waterama where $600 raised from the sale of root beer floats. The root beer was donated by Kathy Pfaff, and floats were made by the Friends of the Library and Library Board volunteers.

The Outing Volunteer Library has applied for and received a certificate of incorporation as a non-profit from the state of Minnesota and has filed an application to the IRS as a tax-exempt 501(3c) institution, which should be automatic since all of our workers and the Library Board members are unpaid volunteers.

Now, all contributions to the Outing Volunteer Library are tax deductible. These contributions are needed to pay utility bills, including heat, light, and telephone.

The program the library started to send boxes of books to the Crosby Care Center is going strong. Several boxes of newer books are given to the Care Center on a routine basis. The Care Center bus picks up new books every 12 weeks.

The board continues to be overwhelmed and impressed with the wonderful community support for this library and extends its thanks to everyone who has assisted.
