Cardinals Hold Off Patriots

In a game that featured 15 lead changes, including nine in the second half, the visiting Staples-Motley Cardinals edged the Pequot Lakes Patriots by a score of 58-55 on Friday night.

Kurtis Moody led all scorers with 20 points but it was not enough as Staples-Motley held off a late surge by the Patriots.

Cardinal point guard Jordan Riewer made two foul shots with 8.3 seconds left for the final margin.

The Patriots jumped to a 7-0 lead early but the Cardinals battled back and led by as many as six.

Michael Goerges’ three pointer with 25 seconds left tied the game at 30-30 just before halftime.

The Cardinals led most of the second half but another Goerges three cut their lead to one with 4:27 left.

Moody gave the Patriots a 53-51 lead with a three point play, but the Staples’ Gunner Johnson came right back with a three of his own for a 54-53 Cardinal lead.

Moody’s putback of his own miss gave the Patriots another one point lead with 30 seconds left, but Cardinal point guard Riewer found Jason Johnson who knocked down the shot for a 56-55 lead.

Pequot Lakes was forced to foul and Riewer made them both. The Patriots had one shot at the end but Matt Michaelson’s attempt rimmed out.

Jason Johnson led the Cardinals with 15 and Derek Wolhowe had 11 points. Gunner Johnson and Jordan Riewer added 10 apiece.

Michael Ward had 10 points for Pequot Lakes, who dropped to 2-5 in the Mid-State Conference and 8-8 overall.
