"We started to move the ball and got on a roll in the second half," Patriots coach Gary Grewe said. Michael Ward hit five of six shots and led all scorers with 13 points to go along with six rebounds. “I am very pleased with his progress,” said Grewe of Ward. “He was a bit rusty to start the year but every practice he’s improving.” Kurtis Moody notched a double double with 11 points and 11 boards, and Jordan Anderson added 10 points and five assists for Pequot. Jon White led Deer River with eight points. Pequot's Michael Ward had a team high 17 points and Kurtis Moody had 16 for the 1-2 Patriots. “It was a great high school basketball game,” said coach Grewe. “I was very pleased with the effort and intensity of the team.” “[Jordan] Riewer hit a couple big threes from about 25 feet that hurt us,” added Grewe, “one right before the half, then another right after seemed to give them a lift.” “We did a lot of good things,” said Grewe, “we just needed to make one more shot.” Riewer finished with 15 points and Derek Wolhowe added 10 for the Cardinals. Against Staples last Thursday, coach Brian Lempola said, “I thought our defense was the key tonight as we held them to just 10 first half points. We were able to create off of forced turnovers and moved the ball well to find the open man.” In beating Brainerd in the season opener Lempola stated, “We struggled a bit in the first half and missed a few good looks at the basket. Even though we trailed most of the game I thought the kids kept their poise and intensity.
