The Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce has selected Chris Monroe to lead the Pequot Lakes Chamber as its new director.
Monroe recently served as executive director of the Iowa Newspaper Association in Des Moines, an association of about 300 daily and weekly newspapers across the state. She led a staff of 25 and directed an annual budget exceeding $15 million in revenue. Her roles included management, volunteer coordination, government advocacy, sales, media buying and event planning.
A graduate of Drake University, Monroe attended the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management at Stanford University. Locally, she volunteers as an executive coach for the Brainerd Lakes Area Economic Development Corporation (BLAEDC) and writes for the Lake Country Journal and Her Voice magazines.
She and her husband, Bill, moved to the Crosslake area in 2016.
“I’m honored to have been selected as the chamber director in Pequot Lakes,” Monroe said. “Prior to making our home in the Brainerd Lakes area, our family vacationed here for 20 years. A stop or two in Pequot Lakes was always a must during our visit. There are many exciting things happening in the community and I’m eager to get started.”
Monroe said that she plans to work with volunteer leaders to provide an array of business services, community events and marketing activities that help the area grow and prosper. She added that her first priority is to meet with as many chamber members and partner organizations as possible in her first 90 days.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Chris is on our team,” said Matt Kilian, president of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce. “There are a lot of positive changes coming to Pequot Lakes, and there is no doubt that Chris will be an asset to the community and the chamber as we redefine our future.”
Monroe replaces Jenna Crawford, who departed the chamber in May. Sue Galligan, the chamber’s events and connections manager, has served as interim director since then. Monroe’s first day at the Pequot office will be October 9th.
With its chamber partners in Pequot Lakes and Crosslake, the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce works to strengthen the regional business community. The chamber has 940 regional members, about 90 of which are located in the Pequot Lakes area.
