Pine River-Backus Area Relay for Life - Looking for a few good teams

Web posted April 18, 2017
Does a night hanging out with your friends, family, and neighbors while raising money in the fight against cancer sound like fun to you? Then here is the perfect fundraising event for you…the Pine River-Backus Area Relay For Life. The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life will be Friday, June 16th at the Pine River-Backus High School Track and Field.

Do you have a co-worker who is going through treatment now? Do you have a family member that had cancer and is now in remission? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of the people you love who may hear the words, “You have cancer?” The Relay For Life gives you the opportunity to do that – talk it over with you family, friends, or co-workers about getting a team together. Each team member needs to raise $100 and can easily do so by selling luminary bags. The bags can be decorated by the donor and honor or be in memory of a survivor. A festive atmosphere is created at the Relay with music, food, or an activity at each campsite. The gates are open to the public at 5 with the opening ceremony being held at 7:00 p.m. The luminary lighting, a must see, will occur at dusk. The Relay previously went overnight, but it now ends at midnight as people are busy and find it hard to commit to being up all night.

We have been doing a “pie” throwing event after the opening ceremony featuring local "contestants”. For a $5 dollar donation, the participant can choose a “contestant” to throw or smash (gently) a plate of whip cream (pie) in the contestant’s face. Our “contestants” that have committed to the event this year are: Sheriff Tom Burch, Superintendent Dave Endicott and Principals Andrew Forbort and Rick Aulie from Pine River-Backus School, and Superintendent Chris Lindholm and Principal Mike O’Neill from Pequot Lakes School.

This is the 14th annual Relay event in Pine River and our teams have come from Crosslake, Pequot Lakes, Longville, Pine River, and Backus. Our Relay event is small but mighty as we have consistently collected over $20,000 in donations each year.

Will you join us in this fight against cancer? The next captain meeting will be held on Monday, April 24th at 6:15 p.m. at The Warehouse in Pine River. Please contact Tina Grewe at 218-568-6084 with any questions in regards to the Relay or if you would like to have a team and are unable to attend the meeting. There have been great strides made in cancer research and treatment, but we need everyone to Finish the Fight!
