Youth can make a positive difference in the community in unassuming ways and they can have fun while they are at it. Recently a group of youth from Pine River-Backus High School has volunteered to help older adults in the community. They visit and help with household chores once or twice a month.
One volunteer connection has resulted in a wonderful friendship. Faith in Action Volunteers, Bobby Brunhuber and Rachael Biggar are AmeriCorps Promise Fellows who work with Pine River-Backus High School youth to engage them in community activities and service learning projects. Since Fall of 2013, they have lead a group of up to 8 students in helping Alvina Dale of Backus, with homemaking and chore services ranging from raking and snow shoveling to vacuuming and bathroom cleaning. The students visit with Alvina a couple times a month and spend an hour or two each time providing friendship and chore services that help her remain in her own home. Youth can be great neighborly volunteers too.
Volunteers are the heart and hands of Faith in Action for Cass County. They provide friendship and connection with the community. They also offer dignity and hope for folks who are struggling and need a little neighborly help. Faith in Action Volunteers provide transportation, visiting, respite for caregivers, light homemaking and chore services, small home repair and accessibility installation of grab bars, railings and ramps. Volunteers choose when and how they want to help others. The Faith in Action office provides training, liability insurance and service coordination.
