WAPOA to Sponsor 6th Annual Shoreland Restoration Contest

Web posted June 10, 2014
This will be the sixth year that WAPOA is sponsoring a Shoreland Restoration Contest. Over the last five years, WAPOA has helped over twenty property owners restore their shorelines. Restoring shorelines with native plantings helps improve water quality by better controlling water run-off into our lakes and shoreline erosion.

This year WAPOA will add a bonus to successful contestants. In addition to the $7000.00 dedicated to the contest winners, Minnesota Conservation Corp (MCC) will offer a crew of six people for two ten hour days to help contest winners to work on their projects. We are very happy to be able to offer this additional help to contest winners! WAPOA’s 2014 Shoreland Restoration Contest began on June 4th with an “Open House” at Moonlite Bay. Thirty-four people interested in shoreland restoration projects attended this event. Professionals from the Minnesota DNR, Crow Wing County Soil and Water, University of Minnesota Extension Division and area vendors were there to help interested parties plan to eliminate erosion and reduce storm water runoff into their lake.

If you want to get advice or enter the contest, plan to attend the follow-up planning meeting on Wednesday, June 18th at Ideal Town Hall from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Bring along photos of your property, a statement of your issues and your goals for improving your shoreline. The experts will help you find the best solution for your stated goals.

A panel of judges will review all the projects and determine environmental needs and feasibility within our financial parameters. All contest winners will be notified shortly after June 19th. All projects that receive awards must be completed during 2014. If you are unable to attend the planning meeting on Wednesday, June 18th and you would still like to enter the contest, you may send your information to Jim Brandt at jbrandt@uslink.net or contact him at 218-543-6483. Remember, the deadline is Wednesday, June 18th.
